Tuberculosis, malaria, dengue fever, leprosy, respiratory illnesses, parasitic diseases and other major diseases are common in Timor-Leste. Malnutrition and unsanitary living condictions compound health problems. Many people do not have good access to health care. These photographs were taken in the Bairopite clinic in the capital Dili.
Jenita is a three year old with a spinal condition that is inoperable in East Timor. Unable to walk by herself, her only hope for an ordinary life is to be flown to Australia for surgery.

Cipriano, a 25 year old with a heart condition that is inoperable in East Timor. In May, after years of waiting, Australian donors contacted by Bairopite clinic in Dili enabled him to be flown to Sydney for an operation that will enable him to live normally.
